To provide new and old fans with a refresher on Scorpion’s origin story, revenge of the scorpions does a satisfying job of visualizing the formative early interactions between the vengeful specter and his main rival, Sub-Zero. Originally framed for the extermination of the wife and child of the Shirai Ryu Clan and Scorpion, Sub-Zero is understandably vexed when Scorpion attacks him with all the fires of the Netherrealm.

9/10 Who killed the Shirai Ryu?

A deep mystery in the early Mortal Kombat games was Sub-Zero’s motives for exterminating the Cancer-like Scorpion clan Shirai Ryu. Through Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat 4the details of the Shirai Ryu massacre and the origin of this bloody rivalry would be revealed, giving fans a whole new perspective on Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Fast forward to the events and revelations of Mortal Kombat X, where Scorpion and Sub-Zero were re-enlightened to the truth of their deception, becoming allies. But, unfortunately, this new partnership does not change the past or the vile duplicity inflicted on these fighters by the insidious Quan Chi.

8/10 Who is Superior Kombatant?

When the Mortal Kombat timeline was retconned in mortal combat, the ninth self-titled entry in the franchise, fans were treated to plenty of fundamental character interactions, like the fatal fight between Scorpion and the original Sub-Zero, newly rendered and full of fantastic imagery. Anticipating the results of the first tournament, Raiden knows that Scorpion will exact revenge on Sub-Zero, mistakenly holding him responsible for the deaths of his wife and child.

Unfortunately, this act will eventually lead to Bi-Han becoming Noob Saibot, a malevolent Netherrealm specter. Seeking to prevent this cycle from starting again, Raiden attempts to talk Scorpion and reason with him, initially succeeding until Sub-Zero arrives aggressively, looking for a fight. Unfortunately, combined with Quan Chi’s push, Scorpion can’t help it, giving in to revenge and starting this historic rivalry in a second timeline.

7/10 Ed Boon Vs. Sub-Zero

Without a doubt, a dig at the rivalry is the fan-speculated preferential treatment given to creator Ed Boon’s vengeful specter, Scorpion. Long considered the driving force behind the feud, Boon’s alleged infatuation with Scorpion has been embraced by fans who often go above and beyond to voice the popular “Professor’s Pet Scorpion” theory.

Honestly, fans can hardly fault Boon for liking this iconic fighting game character he created, and neither can Boon find fault with fans for their art offerings regarding their views on the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

6/10 Are Scorpion and Sub-Zero equal?

Are all fighters created equal? Skeptics of this legendary clash cite the favoritism accorded the yellow-jacketed ninja to Shirai Ryu and NetherRealm Studios’ portrayals of Sub-Zero as proof that they are not. Plus, as expertly pointed out, Scorpion got more love from NRS, as evidenced by MK-X reveal trailer, Legends of Mortal Kombat: Scorpion’s Revenge, and the numerous beatings inflicted by Scorpion on Grand Master Lin Kuei.

This visual endorsement went so far as to become a point of comic relief among astute sleuths in the MK community. Still, that’s not to say Sub-Zero was left out of the franchise. If anything, Sub-Zero has become a fan favorite, appearing in every MK installment of the franchise in some incarnation, perhaps showing that kombatants share a degree of equality.

5/10 The Two Chosen Warriors of Mortal Kombat

Indeed, among the traditional wearers of shinobi shozoku clothing, Scorpion and Sub-Zero reign supreme. However, while their rivalry has set Scorpion and Sub-Zero apart, their standing among the shinobi shozoku-clad kombatants of Mortal Kombat is unmistakable. Beginning with Reptile in the original mortal combatfollowed by the additions of Noob Saibot and Smoke in MK 2, and finally completed by Ermac, Khameleon and Rain when Mortal Kombat Trilogy rolled around, MK’s ninja-clad kombatants were well represented.

Unfortunately, none of these “clones” would achieve the notoriety or stamina of Scorpion and Sub-Zero, often playing tertiary roles as storylines. Perhaps only Noob can claim to be within striking distance of these two, presumably because Noob was the original Sub-Zero, thus benefiting from the development of a distinct storyline and personality.

4/10 Legendary Rivalry

Nonetheless, the wonderful world of sci-fi and animation has produced many memorable warriors and rivalries over the past three decades. Nostalgic rivalries such as Goku-Vegeta and Naruto-Sasuke probably come to mind for anime fans when discussing some of the most fan-loved rivalries.

Indeed, Mortal Kombat’s penultimate juxtaposition between fiery zodiac rooster avatar Scorpio and frozen tiger Sub-Zero certainly qualifies as a storied rivalry filled with memorable clashes. Many MK fans would say that the Scorpion Sub-Zero rivalry is perfection, trumping the rest in tenure and substance.

3/10 Only Culture Earthrealmers

A common theme throughout the Scorpion and Sub-Zero rivalry has been the outside forces that perpetually fuel the flames of dissent between these two fighters. Through the timelines, enemies like Frost, Sektor, Shinnok, and Quan Chi have overturned the peace and caused hostilities between the Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei.

Strange among this group of antagonists is Frost, who, despite being favored by Sub-Zero, has consistently undermined the Grandmaster at every opportunity. Also, while Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s alliance has grown warmer, Frost will remain on the ice, consumed by the caustic disgust that once drove Scorpion.

2/10 Lin Kuei Scum!

Over three decades, Scorpion and Sub-Zero have become synonymous with the Mortal Kombat franchise. However, having appeared in every iteration of Mortal Kombat since the beginning, Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s story has remained consistent, marred by deception, retaliation, and violence.

Nonetheless, rage drove Scorpion’s actions, resulting in the death of the first Sub-Zero Bi-Han and many remains with the second incarnation. This vicious cycle will continue until the events of MK X lead to the negotiation of a truce between the famous Shirai Ryu and the Lin Kuei.

1/10 Sub-Zero can only have one best friend.

Given the alterations to the official canon made by the MK9 During the creation of the second timeline, Scorpion and Sub-Zero became less “finished with each other” and more mature fighters who found common ground rooted in mutual respect. Finally, in doing so, the two would see their similarities and the mutual enemies they now face.

However, perhaps the whole camaraderie is just an elaborate illusion perpetrated by Scorpion, hoping to let Sub-Zero’s guard down. Granted, if something is too good to be believed, it probably is; a clear illustration of the perils Sub-Zero could face due to his ignorance.
