Q1 2022 China Market Update: The Sum of All Fears and Liu He Lifts the Market
Thursday, April 7, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. EDT

The first quarter of 2022 was one for the record books. A strong January saw China outperform as the central government announced supportive and easing policy measures. Then the Russian invasion of Ukraine, soaring commodity prices, and Omicron outbreaks in Hong Kong and mainland China caused a dramatic about-face.

Then the SEC released the first draft list of Chinese companies listed in the United States that could face delisting in three years due to the Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act (HFCAA). These issues amounted to something KraneShares CIO Brendan Ahern called “the sum of all fears” in the markets.

We believe investors have priced in the worst-case scenario for multiple events, which have driven offshore stocks, particularly Chinese internet stocks, to hit decade-long lows.

Finally, to cap off a dramatic quarter, Chinese Vice Premier and third-highest ranking government official Liu He delivered a speech on March 16 that sent markets soaring. In his speech, He reaffirmed China’s support for internet marketplaces and platforms and its commitment to work with the United States to resolve the radiation issue. Now, investors are waiting for the fulfillment of these promises.
