Red Bull is set to receive a fortune from Alpine for Pierre Gasly, ahead of the 2023 F1 season. According to reports, the French driver will replace Fernando Alonso at Alpine next season and has been released by Red Bull for a fee of $10m.
The transfer was made official during the 2022 Japanese F1 GP when Alpine announced Gasly as the second driver while AlphaTauri announced Nyck De Vries as his replacement.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1 about signing with Alpine, Gasly said he was ready to begin his journey outside of Red Bull. He said:
“It was a clear call and certainly very appealing. It was the right time for me to take my own start and take my career on my own and start this incredible story with Alpine.”
Alpine team principal Otmar Szafneur praised the way Pierre Gasly’s move from AlphaTauri to Alpine was handled. He said:
“Well, there are a few things to it all, but what I can tell you is that it was really easy to work with Franz [Tost]Helmut [Marko] and christian [Horner] to secure Pierre’s future. They were very correct and true to their word and did exactly what they said they were going to do, and it was a pleasure to work with them.”
Otmar also stressed the importance of sorting things out for the next season:
“It’s great for the future. It’s for next year. So we still have to focus on this year, what we have to do, we have to do a good job. But it’s good to know that the next year is sorted and that we can get continue this year and get ready for the next one as well.
Pierre Gasly perfectly meets Alpine’s criteria
In signing Pierre Gasly, Otmar Szafneur explained that Alpine had a specific criteria they were looking to meet. He was a rider who was fast, had experience and had youth on his side. Pierre Gasly met these criteria perfectly.
“As everyone knows, we had a seat available after or around the summer holidays, then we started looking at who would be the best fit, and we had some criteria to work on. The three things we were looking for were naturally speed, a fast driver, an experienced driver, and also youth at the same time. And adding the three things, there aren’t many people who have it all and Pierre Gasly certainly has it. We thought it suited us perfectly. So we put it on our shortlist, and then we got to it.
Alpine will have a driver combination of Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly next season and it will be interesting to see how the two drivers get along.
